Frequently Asked Questions about Psychotherapy and Counselling

HOW IS PSYCHOTHERAPY DIFFERENT FROM COUNSEllING

All psychotherapists and counsellors are different in what they offer or how they will be with you and it is of the utmost importance that you feel comfortable or have a rapport, or just a feeling that this or that person will be right for you.

Both psychotherapists and counsellors can work short term , longer term or open-ended.

Both can work in a focussed way e.g. deal with stress at work

I believe my training has enabled me to work at some depth, sometimes with aspects of the unconscious. This requires of me,personal insight, groundedness, a trust in the process and an openness which comes from both a lengthy and thorough training and considerable work in my own therapy.

I value that my training has been lengthy and considerable. The training and its rigours changed me deeply as a person which has meant the integration of the training itself has gone deep and been deeply assimilated.

I felt and feel it is right that as a Psychotherapist I had to be in therapy myself all the way through the training - for me this was a 10 year period. This taught me how to work from my own vulnerability and alerted me to the possibility of 'spilling' my issues onto my client. This personal work is needed, certainly during training, whether I am working with someone who wants 6 sessions or who is still working with me after 3 or more years. For me the deeper issues I needed to look at were only approachable with someone with whom I had built a deep trust and this in itself takes time.
